To resign or not to resign

Just when I was contemplating whether to accept a job offer from another call center or not, my good-friend-office-chum, CHE (from Joys' Team) sent me this email. How timely and appropriately this is to be read especially with what I currently feel. I am really on the brink of leaving the company that I have learned to love in past two years. Anyhoo, here is the email she sent me an hour after my Friday shift ended.

AN OPEN ADVICE ABOUT CAREER DECISIONS:

Several of my staff has approached me lately about their career decisions. I really appreciate my staff opening up to me. It is quite reassuring to know that they're still having second thoughts about leaving.

Here is part of the email I sent to a "confused" staff:

I have worked for more than 5 companies already so I guess you might be correct in saying I have had considerable experience about leaving and moving on. I will not stop you nor tell you to leave, though of course it will be better if you stay. In any career decision, leaving or staying I believe, based from my personal experiences and as an HR professional, should only be done for the right reasons.

For one, you shouldn't leave because you don't like several people in the company, nor should you stay because of the friends you have made here. At the end of the day, it is your life. Your friends or "enemies" should not make or break your career. If you let them be the deciding factor, then maybe you should think twice. You are the craftsman of your fate and the captain of your ship. Captain Hook shouldn't be one of your worries!

Do not leave nor stay because of the "brand" of your company. If that was the case, I would have rushed off and sign my JO in "C"! Ask yourself whether you want to be a big fish in a small pond or a small fish in a bigger pond. Know your priorities. Only you can answer that.

Do not leave the company because you're so damn frustrated about the way things are being run, or stay because you have this "messianic complex" that you can change things overnight. Be realistic about the things. (THET--- I am really tring to do this even before I read this email)

Learn to accept that there is no perfect company. Be accepting that change is a slow and painful process at times and be thankful that you realize and act on things that can be changed and improved. Definitely, do not leave or stay just because your parents want you to. I know I am advocating obedience to parents but again, we are talking about YOUR career. But learn to value their wisdom and discern well.

Money isn't everything. The package being offered now might be better but look at the long-term prospects. Do not leave or stay just solely on the compensation package. Look for growth prospects and review their career plans for you. Your immediate gains today might actually be a loss a few years from now if you do the Math. (THET- very true. Otherwise, I have already accepted anoffer with 3k higher than my current rate)

Boredom is another challenge all professionals are faced with during lull periods in their career. Do not leave because you have become so bored with your job. Do not stay either because you want things as they are. Change is inevitable in any organization. Talk to your boss. Ask for more responsibilities or other tasks if you're bored. Enroll in a special course. If you're satisfied with the status quo and is just waiting for retirement hoping things will stay the same, you're in for a big disappointment - either you will be forced to change or you will be forced to leave. Be ready before that time comes. Boredom or complacency is perennial battle most professionals have to deal with. Arm yourself with creativity everyday!

Tonight I suggest you rest well. Sit still and listen to what He is saying. PRAY. I have always made my career decisions through His guidance. He was and still is my Career Adviser/Talent Manager. Your work, our work, is a vocation. He knows us more than we know ourselves so trust Him for whatever plans He has for you. You can never go wrong.

And remember: Use your head to get to the top. But use your heart to stay.

This is very enlightening.

A lot of people has so much to say about this "recent event" but only a few dared to speak. Why? Because they know that nobody is and probably will never be willing to listen. Their effort will be wasted anyway so there is really no reason for them to join the the "inquiry".These people who are expected to listen to their grievances have had their eyes blinded and had their ears deaf. There is no use and sense even if the silent majority would come up. How I wish a signature campaign would work in "our" club.

But reality intervenes.

This is not a perfect world or a blockbuster flick where
"GOOD PREVAILS OVER EVIL" or where the "oppressor will be punished over the time."

I would like to emphasize that I am writing this blog NOT out of bitterness or out of sour graping. The people around me know that I just "tried" because there is this one also "tried".Kapal nga ng mukha eh. I've told myself over and over again that I have no such intention to be the ONE because of several reasons:

1. I am not yet "seasoned"
2. I have to go on leave this December
3. I might leave the country before 2008
(which will defeat the purpose the need of having ONE) and lastly,
3. I feel that the speaker of the house doesn't like me.

Nevertheless, I did it anyway. In fact, I was the last to submit. about 5 hours late. But I would like to reiterate: If this ONE did not try, I wouldn't have tried it as well.

This recent news is really a life changing event. When a portion of the silent majority stood up and came forward to the "upper chambers," they were disappointed. It's no longer surprising for me though. I have already expected the outcome.

On the other hand, I know that THE OTHER ONE is also reading my blog. I just want you to know that something may have been stolen away from you but please remember that you have gained the UTMOST RESPECT of those SILENT MAJORITY. And that's more important than any other laurels that you could have. You have touched people's lives and we will always have our FAITH in you. We love you and we will always look up to you. It will take a lot for the "ONE" to gain our respect because we know her work ethics, we know how the "ONE" deceived the people from the upper chambers. Just like us, you are one-silent-wonder-worker. That is why, the people of "our society" really respect you. Walang halong plastikan 'neng.

I would like to end this serious but vague blog with Abraham's Lincoln infamous nuggets of wisdom:

  • With public sentiment, nothing can fail. Without it, nothing can succeed.
  • You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.
  • Stand with anybody that stands right, stand with him while he is right and part with him when he goes wrong.
  • Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves.
  • Every man is said to have his peculiar ambition. Whether it be true or not, I can say for one that I have no other so great as that of being truly esteemed of my fellow men, by rendering myself worthy of their esteem.
  • If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?

and lastly,

You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.

Hear it from Bill....he should know.

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they DID NOT and WILL NOT learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world. Love him or hate him, he sure hit the nail on the head with this.

Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it!Dang! I'm so glad I can hold off my emotions now.Otherwise, this blog will be polluted with office work's RANTS!

Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss.

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping – they called it opportunity.

Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents’ generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has NOT. In some schools they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.

How right this man is. Don't y
ou think?

Onli in da Pilipins

Its funny that you never realize how unique Filipinos are unless seen from a foreigner’s perspective. Erika and I are so used to the frequent visits of executives, especially our QA counterparts from our head office in Canada. Guess what is the first thing they noticed coming from the airport?

The pollution? Nope.

The scorching heat? Nah ah.

The first thing they observe is the way Filipinos drive. They are simply amazed at how we find “order in chaos”. They likened our highways (notably EDSA) to a main waterway where there are no lanes to follow and you are free to switch lanes from left to right just like boats and that lanes painted on the road are only there just so we know how to measure how wide our highway is since they observed that we normally can fit six cars (with buses and trucks included) in a three-lane road.

Other observations include:

  • We blink our headlights first to oncoming traffic before crossing an intersection.
  • We can honk our car horns as often as we want (beeping your car horn is considered rude in other countries, a no-no in Japan as well).
  • Everyone has the “right of way”.
  • Instead of defensive driving, we practice offensive driving.

Pinoys interpret the stoplight as green = go, yellow = go faster, and

red = go at your own risk

They are also impressed with the pinoy jeepneys and how the individual arts represent the personality of the owners and drivers. Thee sky high antennas, the colorful body stickers, the sarimanoks at the front of the hood etch. It’s a good thing they didn’t ask me the meaning of one of the signs that we saw hanging at the foot rail of one of the jeepneys when we were crossing Ortigas. It read – “Anak ako ng tatay kong baog!”

I am what I am...

I am what I am...

(Just like what happened to my friendster account, I left my blog account open when I was at work and I never had the chance to have it back... It took me more than a year before making a new one..hayYy, sayang mga post ko dun! So apparently, this is just a re-post from my friendster account.)

I hate procrastination. I work in a call center. My day starts at 8pm...It takes me 45 minutes to make all the rituals i have to do before going to work (taking a bath, having my teeth brushed, and getting dressed up..mabilis ba?) . It takes one hour travel time from home to work. My work starts at 10pm to 6am. I work 8 hours a day (and that already includes a one-hour break.) I always go home on the dot. I log out in my Avaya system at exactly 6am (assuming there is no need to render overtime) and with that, i should be home by 7am. At 7:30am, I'm already scanning my DVD series of either 24, Grid , Alias or CSI (Vegas and Alias:seasons 1 to 5..thanks to Quiapo btw). I tend to watch 4 episodes a day (or night?) before going to bed. During week ends, my companion is my computer. Thanks to DSL connection that i now get the chance to download music and other video files at a much faster rate (to hell with dial-up connection.) If there are 24 hours in a day, i spend 16 hours on my PC during holidays and/or week ends.I seldom go to malls as I make it a point that if I will do, i have enough money with me to buy what ever i want to buy. I'm not a fan of window shopping.I dont buy stuff for more than a grand. There's Divi and 168 for those.I'm a very frugal person but that exludes my big appetite for DVDs and food. I could spend less than a grand for an outfit but my budget for food and DVD will be no less than 2 grand a week. I can lay on my bed the whole day just watching cable programs.

This is me..I know that for some, my life would seem to be so dull and boring. But i like the way I'm managing my life now.Maybe because i just got tired of those busy friday gimmicks and early morning-after shift drinking session (well, i dont drink..just a matter of socialization.)

There is just one thing I know i would want to have with me everyday..that's RUSSELL.
